About The Book

Walking with Tagore: A Poetic Biography is an attempt to revisit the life and inner journey of Rabindranath Tagore through poetry.

Rather than presenting a conventional biography arranged around dates, events, and historical facts, the book approaches Tagore’s life as an unfolding journey of consciousness—from the sensitive child of Jorasanko to the poet, thinker, educator, and universal human being whose vision transcended boundaries of nation, culture, and time.

The poems trace significant stages and experiences of his life: his childhood and formative years at Jorasanko, encounters with the wider world, the solitude of Shilaidaha, personal grief and loss, the creative flowering of Gitanjali, his educational vision at Santiniketan, and his growing engagement with humanity and the world.

The book seeks to illuminate not only what Tagore experienced, but how those experiences shaped his imagination, philosophy, creativity, and understanding of human existence. His life is presented not as a distant historical narrative, but as a living journey in which the reader is invited to walk beside him.

At its heart, this is a book about becoming—about how experience, suffering, love, nature, creativity, and reflection can expand the human spirit.

By bringing Tagore’s journey into a poetic form, the book hopes to offer both a tribute to an extraordinary life and an invitation to readers to encounter, through his journey, something of their own search for truth, beauty, freedom, and light.

About The Author

Soumen Roy (born 31 December 1968) is a poet from Bhatibari village in the Alipurduar district of West Bengal and a postgraduate in English Literature. A sensitive and contemplative voice in contemporary Bengali poetry, his writing is deeply engaged with human emotions, lived experience, and the complexities of existence.

His poetry explores the inner life of the individual—love, pain, silence, solitude, self-discovery, and the subtle dimensions of human experience. Characterised by restrained language, economy of expression, and philosophical undertones, his poems often seek meaning in the quiet spaces between experience and reflection. For Roy, poetry is not merely an act of utterance, but a dialogue between one soul and another.

Although rooted in personal experience, his poetry reaches towards the universal, inviting readers to recognise their own emotions and questions within the intimate landscape of his verse.

His published collections include Jhorapatar Dinolipi (Diary of Fallen Leaves), Jekhane Shabdo Furoy (Where Words End), Prem Kande Na (Love Does Not Weep), and Alochhayar Nirob Japon (The Silent Sojourn of Light and Shadow).

Within the introspective and contemplative tradition of Bengali poetry, Soumen Roy seeks a quiet poetic language through which the visible world opens into the unseen. His work invites readers to turn inward, encounter the depths of their own being, and perceive life with greater sensitivity and awareness.
