Dr. Utkarsh Sinha’s book, Socialism, provides a detailed account of the development of socialist ideology in Uttar Pradesh (UP), a centre of Indian politics. The book traces the journey of socialism from the freedom struggle to 2025, describing Uttar Pradesh as a bastion of socialist thought. Leaders like Acharya Narendra Dev, Ram Manohar Lohia, Jayaprakash Narayan, Mulayam Singh Yadav, and Akhilesh Yadav promoted social justice, economic equality, and democratic values.
The book begins with the rise of socialism during the freedom struggle, when the Congress Socialist Party was formed in 1934. Lohia’s “”Sapta Kranti”” (seven revolutions), inspired by the Russian Revolution, and Narendra Dev’s ethical socialism deeply penetrated the social fabric of Uttar Pradesh. They empowered the voices of farmers, labourers, and the underprivileged. The Mandal Commission and the anti-Emergency movements gave socialism a new direction.
Akhilesh Yadav linked socialism to the digital age and inclusiveness. His “”PDA”” (Backward, Dalit, and Minority) strategy challenged the BJP, winning 37 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The laptop scheme, metro projects, and the demand for a caste census modernized socialism.
Despite challenges like the BJP’s Hindutva narrative and organizational weaknesses, the future of socialism rests on social inclusion, digital campaigning, and the strength of coalitions. This book is an important source for researchers and political enthusiasts to understand the relevance of socialism in Uttar Pradesh.

About The Author

Dr. Utkarsh Sinha is a seasoned Indian journalist, columnist, and documentary filmmaker based in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh & a native of Ballia district. He was born in Varanasi and pursued higher education at Gorakhpur University and Ph.D from Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University. He has served as the editor of four Hindi newspapers and is a well-recognized face on television. His articles have been published in international newspapers, with over 800 pieces featured in prominent national and international publications. With over 25 years of experience in the media industry, he has worked across diverse platforms, including print journalism, television, radio, and digital media. He contributed to research and participated in Aamir Khan Productions’ series Satyamev Jayate.
Currently residing in Lucknow, Utkarsh Sinha, a wanderer by temperament, has traveled to 21 countries, showing a keen interest in understanding local societies and environments during his journeys.
