Description

About The Book

Gloria Naylor’s works like, The Women of Brewster Place (1982), Linden Hills (1985), Mama Day (1988), Bailey’s Cafe (1992) become novels in which the reader finds a kind of a metafictive female Adam, the Afro-American fictional female, as an individual who evolves her identity as an identity of womanhood imbued with an alazonic essence. Naylor’s novelistic women protagonists become rebels as well as rebel-victims in their process of liberation from male hegemonistic-appropriations.
Gloria Naylor has been labelled as a writer whose fictions get narrated as difficult, utterly original psychic, sociological journeys to the interior of human consciousness. What the reader witnesses in the novels, included in this study, are terrifying situations, born out of gendered-disequilibrium as a consequence of male-induced oppression and discrimination. The Black women personages, as the central novelistic protagonists reconstruct their lives and realize their dreams, by undertaking a picaresque type movement of freedom. This journey of freedom also involves the transition of identity, enslavement to emancipation, from eironic suppression to alazonic dignity. The resurgence of identity, rootedness and belongingness, constitutes the final vindication of the coloured feminine sensibility as applying to Naylor’s women characters. This book makes an attempt to analyze the narrative and thematic contours, permutations and combinations which form the main contributive factors in the reconstruction of the female Black Self in an ethnic context.
