Description

About The Book

During the rule of the Nizam in the erstwhile Hyderabad State, peasants and agricultural labourers lived under severe oppression. Powerful landlords and Zamindars, backed by the State police, extracted heavy rents, imposed forced labour, and kept villagers in perpetual debt. Their authority was brutally enforced by the Razakars, a paramilitary force led by Kasim Razvi, who spread terror through arson, loot, and atrocities, including assaults on women.
Amid this exploitation, the Communist Party of India mobilized the rural poor, transforming scattered resentment into organized resistance. This movement, remembered as the Telangana People’s Struggle, was both an agrarian revolt against feudal landlords and a political challenge to the Nizam’s autocracy. Thousands of peasants, armed with little more than courage and makeshift weapons, confronted landlords, police, and Razakars in a bitter conflict.
Among those who joined the resistance was a man adopted by a wealthy landlord and village officer. Though raised within privilege, he turned against the system that had sustained his family, choosing instead to fight alongside the oppressed peasants. His defiance symbolized the moral awakening of individuals who refused to remain complicit in injustice.
The struggle claimed many lives—innocent villagers, activists, and families caught in the storm of violence. Yet it refused to break until 1948, when the Indian Union launched Operation Polo, deposing the Nizam and merging Hyderabad with the Republic of India. The end of autocracy marked the beginning of democratic governance, but the memory of the armed struggle endured as a testament to courage and sacrifice.
