About the book

Let’s move forward with time, although today women are moving towards modernity and freedom, but have they really become independent? Are they able to break the shackles of tradition? Has the so-called modern society been able to give them their rightful place? These are some of the questions whose answers we will try to find out through this book. This book is about the profound study of a contemporary Indian English writer Shashi Deshpande who writes about women clenched between tradition and modernity. A minute study of Shashi Deshpande’s novels discloses her comprehensive insight into the dilemma, predicaments and troubles of Indian women who experience confinement and subjugation due to traditional male patriarchal society. She portrays her women characters with their expectations, trepidations, ambitions, annoyance and nuisance. They all are conscious of their powers, vigour, restraints and obstacles. Societies with its patriarchal mindset pressurize women and create disillusioned and frustrated conditions for them. Deshpande draws attention towards women’s inferior and marginalized position in a male-dominated society. The identity that is searched by women in any field can be established if a woman decides any cost. As a child, as a daughter, as an adolescent, as a newly married partner, as a mother, as a ways-earner, and as a grandmother, she has to go through many acid tests and come out successfully and ultimately prove her worth. It is not an easy task. One has to have the courage to show her strength and be an icon of womanhood.
