Description
About The Book
Biomechanics & Kinesiology: Principles, Analysis, and Applications in Human Movement is designed to introduce students to the scientific foundation of human movement and the mechanical laws that govern it. The book follows the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) syllabus, ensuring its academic relevance for students of physiotherapy, kinesiology, and allied health sciences.
The text begins with the fundamentals of biomechanics, explaining motion, force, equilibrium, and muscle mechanics. It presents how Newton’s laws apply to the human body, helping readers understand the relationship between structure and movement, and how muscles and joints generate, transfer, and control force. These principles provide the groundwork for analyzing human motion in clinical, ergonomic, and sports contexts.
The following sections explore the biomechanics of the spine, detailing the structure and function of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar regions. The interactions between vertebrae, discs, ligaments, and muscles are explained to highlight how the spine balances flexibility with stability. The discussion connects spinal biomechanics to posture, injury mechanisms, and rehabilitation applications, enabling learners to interpret real-world movement problems.
The final section focuses on the biomechanics of the thorax and chest wall, describing how the rib cage, sternum, diaphragm, and intercostal muscles function as an integrated system that protects vital organs and supports respiration. The mechanical principles of breathing, rib movement, and thoracic expansion are presented with clinical significance, linking theory to respiratory physiotherapy and posture correction.
Each chapter includes learning objectives, tables, illustrations, and concise summaries for quick review. Written in an accessible academic tone, the content encourages analytical thinking and the application of biomechanics to patient care and human performance.
This book is ideal for undergraduate and postgraduate learners in physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and sports sciences, as well as practitioners seeking to strengthen their understanding of movement analysis. By following the NCAHP syllabus, it ensures that students develop a clear, evidence-based approach to understanding how the body moves, balances, and functions efficiently.
