Description

About the Book

This book provides a comprehensive and systematic treatment of pulp and paper science and technology, integrating fundamental principles with industrial practices. It is designed to serve as an authoritative reference for undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers, and professionals associated with the pulp and paper industry.
Beginning with an introduction to the history, classification, and chemical composition of paper and paperboard, the book thoroughly examines the structural and chemical components of wood, including cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, extractives, and chemical additives. Detailed discussion on wood anatomy and its relevance to papermaking processes lays a strong foundation for understanding raw material behavior during processing.
Subsequent chapters focus on pulping technologies, covering raw material preparation, chemical pulping processes such as sulphite and kraft pulping, reaction chemistry, process variables, and modern pulping methods. The book offers in-depth insight into chemical recovery systems, black liquor processing, recausticizing, alternative recovery technologies, and value-added lignin by-products, reflecting current industrial and sustainability practices.
The text further elaborates on washing, screening, and cleaning of pulp, followed by an extensive treatment of bleaching chemistry, including conventional and advanced bleaching agents, reaction mechanisms, and operating conditions. Stock preparation, internal and external chemical additives, fillers, dyes, and sizing systems are discussed with emphasis on their influence on paper quality.
