About the Book
Education is a noble business, and teachers are the most valuable asset in any for-profit educational company. Many businesses wisely appoint former teachers as managers, but this often leads to challenges.
Managing and teaching require vastly different skill sets. Assuming that a good teacher can easily transition into management is a common mistake. New managers can quickly become overwhelmed by the demands of administration, HR, interdepartmental coordination, tough conversations, and building a supportive culture. This struggle is not only traumatic for the manager but can also have a devastating impact on the teachers they oversee.
This book is a practical guide, distilled from 17 years of experience working with top professionals across diverse organizations. It’s designed to help founders build strong academic departments, academic leaders develop effective teams, and new managers confidently navigate their challenging roles. You’ll learn not only how to be an excellent manager but also how to create an organization that prioritizes teachers, ensuring success for the company, the educators, and those they serve.
About the Author
Joel Abel has been in the education industry since graduating university. He’s worked on three different continents, and worked at all levels of the academic hierarchy from teacher to business owner. Joel spent time working for major organizations such as Disney and Education First, where he learned how great organizations work. Working across international cultures and ways of doing business in several organizations, Joel was often troubled by two large and consistent problems:
Many people managing teachers were not prepared for the job.
Inadequate management created dysfunctional environments where teachers were not able to serve their students.
These problems were not inevitable, and Joel had a clear vision on how they could be prevented. If these managers that he kept meeting again and again had a framework to do their jobs well there would be a chance to improve the circumstances for everyone. So he sat down and wrote one.
As of 2024, Joel currently works as a consultant in the education industry in Beijing. He is completing his masters in innovation and entrepreneurship.
