About The Book
Emergency Airway Management: A Guide for EMTs and Paramedics is a comprehensive, practice-oriented textbook designed to address the critical airway management needs of prehospital emergency care providers. Airway control is the foundation of life-saving intervention in emergency medicine, and this book equips Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and Paramedics with the essential knowledge, skills, and clinical judgment required to manage airways safely and effectively in diverse and challenging environments.
The text bridges theory and real-world practice through a clear, structured, and learner-friendly approach. It begins with a concise review of airway anatomy, respiratory physiology, and principles of oxygenation, and progressively advances to airway assessment, basic and advanced airway techniques, and decision-making in time-critical scenarios. Emphasis is placed on the realities of prehospital care, including limited resources, trauma scenes, medical emergencies, pediatric and geriatric populations, and difficult or compromised airways.
Practical skill development is central to the book, covering manual airway maneuvers, airway adjuncts, bag-valve-mask ventilation, supraglottic airway devices, endotracheal intubation, and emergency surgical airway procedures. Dedicated sections on airway pharmacology and Rapid Sequence Intubation (RSI) provide clear protocols, algorithms, and troubleshooting guidance to enhance procedural confidence.
Incorporating current evidence-based practices, national and international guidelines, and patient safety principles, the book also addresses post-intubation care, complication prevention, ethical and legal considerations, documentation, and team communication. With clinical pearls, case-based discussions, checklists, flowcharts, and review questions, this textbook serves as an essential academic and field reference, empowering emergency care providers to secure and maintain the airway when every second matters.
