About The Book

Awakening the Vighnaharta Within

What if the obstacle before you is also an invitation to awaken?

Ganesha is the one we welcome at beginnings—the remover of obstacles, the guardian of thresholds, the embodiment of wisdom. But what if his deepest teaching is not simply about removing what stands in our way, but about awakening the intelligence within us that knows how to meet life?

Awakening the Vighnaharta Within explores the inner and metaphysical wisdom woven through Ganesha’s sacred stories, symbols and many forms.

Why does Ganesha stand at the threshold? What do his elephant head, expansive ears, curved trunk, great belly and tiny companion, Mushaka, reveal about the human mind? And what might his beloved stories teach us about desire, anger, attachment, pride, comparison, boundaries, discernment and the courage to begin again?

Drawing upon the spiritual teachings of Shampa Mukherjee, each traditional story unfolds first as story and then as a mirror—inviting the reader to discover its meaning within their own life. Reflections and simple contemplative practices encourage awareness without judgement, and responsibility without self-blame.

Through Ganesha’s eight forms, sacred symbols and timeless stories, this book offers a gentle journey from inner obstruction towards clarity, balance and purposeful action.

This is not only a book about the Ganesha we welcome into our homes.

It is an invitation to awaken the Vighnaharta within—the quiet intelligence that clears confusion, restores inner harmony and helps us take the next true step.

About The Author

Dr. Shaifali Gupta is an MD Pathologist, board-certified Lifestyle Medicine physician (Diplomate, IBLM), and author whose work lies at the intersection of science, human behaviour, wellbeing and the contemplative traditions of India. Through more than two decades in medicine and research, she has remained interested not only in how the body functions, but also in how thought, meaning, choices and inner awareness influence the way we live.
Alongside her scientific work, she has a longstanding engagement with meditation and the metaphysical wisdom carried within India’s sacred stories. She is particularly drawn to the possibility that ancient narratives can be approached not only as stories of the Divine, but also as mirrors through which we may understand the mind, recognise our inner obstacles and move through life with greater clarity.
Awakening the Vighnaharta Within emerges from this meeting of worlds: scientific curiosity, lived experience, contemplative practice and the timeless wisdom of Indian traditions. Inspired by the spiritual teachings and metaphysical interpretations of Shampa Mukherjee, the book explores Ganesha’s form, symbols and sacred stories as invitations to cultivate discernment, resilience, inner balance and purposeful action. It is written especially for contemporary readers who may remember the rituals and stories, yet have not encountered the inward wisdom they contain.
Her writing seeks to make traditional wisdom accessible without diminishing its sacredness, bringing ancient insights into thoughtful dialogue with contemporary life and science across cultures and generations. She is also the author of MindSutra: Transforming Woe to Wow and The Journey Within.
