Description

ABOUT THE BOOK

This book dealt chiefly with the incorporation of biotechnological tools in aquaculture for the production of improved strains. Conventional methods of aquaculture have been outdated due to their inefficiency in producing adequate stocks for the increasing population. However, during the past few decades, the scenario of aquaculture has changed noticeably due to the invasion of genetic engineering in the field. Genetic manipulation techniques help to produce organisms with improved traits such as disease resistance, a better growth rate, reproductive capacity, and feed conversion efficiency to withstand fluctuating environmental conditions like increasing temperature, low dissolved oxygen, and pollution. In the modern era, an in-depth knowledge of DNA-based technologies has been a prerequisite for aquaculture ventures to run lucratively.

Moreover, this book provides an insight into the basic techniques of biotechnology and genetics used for the improvement of aquaculture performance. In the first chapter, readers can go through some basic concepts of genetics, which help to understand the contents of this book on a deep level. Different types of synthetic hormones used to induce breeding in fish have been explained in the second chapter. In the succeeding chapters, readers can visualize different types of genetic modification methods with the aid of pictures. Further, this book dealt with the production details of transgenics, methods of gene transfer, and cryopreservation of gametes. Altogether, this book would serve as basic instruction material for students and researchers new to aquaculture and genetics.
