Description

About The Book

Cuttack’s past is etched into its walls and stone structures, preserving the echoes of its rich and layered history. Once a major trading centre and cultural hub, the city witnessed the rise and fall of many dynasties, leaving behind a legacy that still defines its identity today.
During the period of the British Raj, Cuttack played an important role, and the political administration, as well as the contributions of British officers and missionaries, are still evident in the city. The Gorakabar stands as a significant piece of evidence—a silent witness to the untold secrets of the past connected with the history of Cuttack.
The central character of this book guides readers through these layered histories, helping them understand what truly happened in Cuttack and introducing the key figures who contributed to the city’s proud and enduring legacy. Through this narrative, the book brings to life the people, events, and places that shaped Cuttack’s historical identity.

About The Author

Mahesh Chandra Bhoi has a deep and long-standing interest in the history of India. He has explored and visited numerous historic buildings, architectural sites, and places of heritage significance that have contributed to enhancing the historical and cultural value of India. His work also extends to the study of historical cemeteries, including some of the oldest cemeteries in the country.
He is dedicated to preserving heritage along with its historical context and significance. Through extensive fieldwork and research, he has documented neglected and little-known sites and is among the first to write a comprehensive book on the history of the Hoolker Bridge Cemetery.
Considerable work has been carried out through his projects to highlight the deteriorating condition of many old graveyards and to propose methods for their conservation and improvement. He believes that many secrets of India’s past remain buried within old graves, and his work aims to uncover, document, and preserve these hidden histories for future generations.
