Description

About The Book

This book presents a comparative study of the financial performance of select public and private sector banks in India, offering valuable insights for scholars, researchers, and students of banking and finance. The study focuses on two public sector banks—State Bank of India (SBI) and Canara Bank—and two private sector banks—HDFC and ICICI—chosen based on their market capitalization, branch network, and asset quality. The period of study spans from 2019 to 2023, a transformative era for Indian banking, marked by consolidation, capital infusion, and policy reforms.

The research employs the EAGLES Model, an analytical framework that evaluates six critical parameters: Earnings, Asset Quality, Growth, Liquidity, Equity, and Strategy. Each parameter is examined using key financial indicators such as Return on Assets, Net NPAs, Loan and Deposit Growth, Capital Adequacy Ratio, and income ratios. Secondary data from RBI sources and annual reports of the selected banks form the empirical base. Advanced statistical tools, including descriptive statistics, the Coefficient of Variation method, and one-way ANOVA, are used to analyze and interpret the data.

Findings reveal significant differences in financial performance between the two sectors. While public sector banks exhibit strength in stability and conservative lending, private sector banks demonstrate superior performance in profitability, strategic income generation, and overall financial agility. Canara Bank, in particular, underperforms in comparison to its peers, signaling the need for improvements in credit risk management, investment strategy, and operational efficiency.

This book contributes to academic discourse by providing a structured model for evaluating bank performance and by offering evidence-based conclusions relevant for policy formulation and institutional reform. It underscores the importance of Early Warning Systems, robust asset quality monitoring, and strategic reorientation in public banking. The study is a valuable resource for academic inquiry and policy research, contributing to a deeper understanding of evolving performance patterns in India’s banking sector.
